The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund awarded a grant to the African Methodist Episcopal Church Service and Development Agency (AME-SADA) to expand their Cholera Prevention Program in Haiti. Funding directly supported their program at the Pont Matheux (Arcahaie) Health Center through their hiring of health workers, the procurement of temporary supplies, and the launch of a cholera awareness campaign.
Specifically, funds have been used to:
- Employ 3 doctors, 5 nurses, 3 lab technicians, 5 nurses’ aides, 47 health agents, and 192 birth attendants - all Haitian personnel.
- Procure supplies, such as water purification tablets, cleansers and disinfectants, and oral rehydration packets.
- Organize Rally Posts and at-home visits where community residents will be informed about cholera symptoms, treatment options, and the importance of using clean water and practicing safe hygiene.
This program provided specialized care for cholera by hiring health workers to deal exclusively with the epidemic, and use separate treatment facilities. AME-SADA employed an outreach program to educate Haitians about the disease, inform the community about treatment options, and spread knowledge about simple ways to limit the spread of cholera.
Through its network of seven outpatient clinics, AME-SADA was the only organization providing healthcare in the Arcahaie and Cabaret region. The total population of the region is 350,000 and the average income is less than $200 per year.
Why We Invested in AME-SADA
Clinton Bush Haiti Fund's grant to AME-SADA represents our commitment to filling gaps in near-term needs, recognizing that the program's impact on health care will have a far-reaching, long-term positive impact on both lives and livelihoods.
Transforming Lives and Livelihoods
- Employed 250 staff members in an immediate response to the health challenges of cholera in the Archaie and Cabaret region and maintained a cholera treatment center in its Pont Matheux Health Center with 215 Haitian health care workers.
- Treated 624 cholera patients and promote cholera awareness for 350,000 residents, focusing on mothers and children.
- Trained religious and political community leaders in cholera health and awareness.
- Provided water purification tablets and oral rehydration packets to aid in the treatment and prevention of the disease.
- Laid the foundation for a healthier community by highlighting the importance of water purification and hygiene.
About AME-SADA
The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church has been working in Haiti for over 125 years. Thirty-four years ago, the AME Church created AME-SADA as an independent 501 (c) (3), to provide humanitarian assistance and socio-economic development in Africa and the Caribbean. AME-SADA has been implementing community development programs in Haiti since 1986. They have had a presence in the Western Department of Haiti since 1996. Learn more about AME-SADA at ame-sada.org.
AME-SADA’s primary focus in recent years has been in providing desperately needed health care and related services to nearly 350,000 people in the Western Department of Haiti – the Chaine des Matheux, Arcahaie and Cabaret regions. In these areas, AME-SADA is the only entity providing health care and outreach programs to the community on a consistent basis.
