Category:
Critical Unmet Needs

Grant Amount: $100,000

Grant Objective:
Grant to support a cholera prevention and treatment program.

  • AME-SADA is the only healthcare organization around Arcahaie and Cabaret.

  • Members of a church gather to learn about Cholera prevention and treatment.

  • A community meeting at one of the AME-SADA health facilities.

This program battles cholera by hiring health workers to focus exclusively on the towns of Arcahaie and Cabaret. Currently, AME-SADA is the only organization providing healthcare in this area. The grant fills a critical and unmet need in the region by getting Haitian families back on their feet by first getting healthy.

The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund awarded a grant to the African Methodist Episcopal Church Service and Development Agency (AME-SADA) to expand their Cholera Prevention Program in Haiti. Funding will directly support their program at the Pont Matheux (Arcahaie) Health Center through their hiring of health workers, the procurement of temporary supplies, and the launch of a cholera awareness campaign.
Specifically, funds will be used to:

  • Employ 3 doctors, 5 nurses, 3 lab technicians, 5 nurses’ aides, 47 health agents, and 192 birth attendants - all Haitian personnel.
  • Procure supplies, such as water purification tablets, cleansers and disinfectants, and oral rehydration packets.
  • Organize Rally Posts and at-home visits where community residents will be informed about cholera symptoms, treatment options, and the importance of using clean water and practicing safe hygiene.

This program will provide specialized care for cholera by hiring health workers to deal exclusively with the epidemic, and use separate treatment facilities. AME-SADA will employ an outreach program to educate Haitians about the disease, inform the community about treatment options and simple ways to limit the spread of cholera.
AME-SADA is the only organization providing healthcare in the Arcahaie and Cabaret region, through its network of 7 outpatient clinics. The total population of the region is 350,000 and the average income is less than $200 per year.

Why We Invested in AME-SADA

Clinton Bush Haiti Fund's grant to AME-SADA represents our commitment to filling gaps in near-term needs, recognizing that the program's impact on health care will have a far-reaching, long-term positive impact on both lives and livelihoods.

Transforming Lives and Livelihoods

With support from the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, AME-SADA will:

  • Establish a Cholera Treatment Center in its Pont Matheux Health Center and hire 215 Haitian health care workers to combat the cholera epidemic;
  • Purchase important supplies such as water purification tablets and oral rehydration packets to aid in treatment and prevention of cholera in this mountainous region;
  • Launch an awareness campaign through Rally Posts and at-home visits to target the 350,000 residents of the towns of Arcahaie and Cabaret and surrounding areas, with a special emphasis on mothers and children;
  • Lay the foundation for a healthier community by emphasizing the importance of water purification and personal hygiene.

About AME-SADA

The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church has been working in Haiti for over 125 years. Thirty-four years ago, the AME Church created AME-SADA as an independent 501 (c) (3), to provide humanitarian assistance and socio-economic development in Africa and the Caribbean. AME-SADA has been implementing community development programs in Haiti since 1986. They have had a presence in the Western Department of Haiti since 1996.

AME-SADA’s primary focus in recent years has been in providing desperately needed health care and related services to nearly 350,000 people in the Western Department of Haiti – the Chaine des Matheux, Arcahaie and Cabaret regions. In these areas, AME-SADA is the only entity providing health care and outreach programs to the community on a consistent basis.
